Keywords hedging academic discourse corpus study Hedging is a rhetorical strategy to soften or weaken an argument in academic writing which shows how skillful a writer is. Thesis abstract serves a pivotal part of the thesis to raise the readers interest to keep on digesting the article that should be packed as concise as possible yet containing dense information. Therefore this study aims to contrast the use of hedging in thesis abstracts on Linguistics written by Indonesian and American Academia. This study used mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative method to gain the insight of the pattern as well as to achieve a thorough and deep comprehension of the data. I collected 30 abstracts covering the years of 2016-2017 written by the American and Indonesian writers. The Indonesian abstracts contain 10 524 words while the American abstracts consist of 7 538 words. The data were then analyzed using Antconc 3.5.0 based on hedging classification by Brooke (2016) and taxonomies by Martin-martin (2008). Hyland s (1996) classification was utilized to trace the function of hedging devices employed in the abstracts. The result shows that the American writers employ a higher hedging words frequency by 28.89 occurrences per 2000 words whereas the Indonesian has a slight fewer frequency (26.5 per 2000 words). Based on the findings of the study the hedging devices employed by the Indonesian writers are very limited in variation. On the other hand the American writers demonstrate the hedges in the abstracts in more various ways than the Indonesian writers. The difference of the writers competence shapes the quality of the writing and without doubt allow the American writers who are categorized as an expert to English while the Indonesian writers are considered as novice to present sophisticated hedges in their writing. I expect that this research would be an implicit guidance for the Indonesian writers in writing research abstract to meet the prerequisite discourse of the academic community. Finally it is suggested the future research cope the area of spoken discourse and cross-examine the writer s motivation of using the hedges to the existing taxonomy.
