Advisors (I) Dr. EnnyIrawati M.Pd(II) Prof. Dr. NurMukminatien M.Pd Keywords Peer and Teacher Assessment writing ability good writing habit The main problems of the students of X MIA 5 in SMA Negeri 1 Kepanjen identified during the preliminary study were their low ability in using appropriate generic structure applying appropriate grammar rules and using correct capitalizations and punctuations in their composition of recount texts. The low writing ability was due to not accustomed to do a good writing habit often made mistakes in writing and also the limited time allocated in teaching and learning writing. To help solve these problems the researcher implemented peer and teacher assessment strategy to improve the students writing ability. A Classroom Action Research was conducted in one cycle. There were four phases in the cycle planning implementing observing and reflecting. Two writing assignments were given in this cycle. There were five stages in process writing brainstorming/ building the knowledge of the field (BKoF) identifying/ modeling of the Text (MoT) outlining/ joint construction of the text (JCoT) independent construction of the text (ICoT) and the last was peer and teacher assessment implementation (using guided checklists). The study was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Kepanjen and involved 30 students of class X MIA 5. It started from January to February 2017. The criteria of success in this study was at least 70% of the students got 10 points of improvement. Before the implementation the students average score of writing was 54. At the end of the cycle the score improved to be 75.6 which 86.7% of students passed the criteria of success. 13.33% of students did not pass the criteria of success because their score had been high enough before the implementation so their writing ability improved not significantly. The findings showed that the implementation of peer and teacher assessment could improve the students writing ability in three aspects of writing i.e. organization grammar and mechanics. The implementation of peer and teacher assessment is recommended to English teachers since it can improve the students writing ability and help the students to be more motivated and critical in writing by improving the strategy first because the researcher has many weaknesses in the study. For further researchers the results of this study can be utilized as a reference to conduct further research on the same skill to teach other text genres and the same or different level of students by improving the strategy first because the researcher has many weaknesses in the study.
