Writing is considered as a difficult skill to master especially for ESL/EFL students. Writing is a complex skill that requires students to have ability in mastering text structure grammar vocabulary and mechanics. Writing recount texts is challenging for students. Many students faced difficulties when starting to write recount texts. The difficulties came from text structure grammar vocabulary and mechanics. This study is addressed to investigate and describe students difficulties in writing recount texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative design which focused on analyzing and knowing the difficulties faced by the students in writing recount text. The data were taken from students written production. The subjects of this study were 30 students in grade ten of Teknik Instalasi Tenaga Listrik Department in SMKN 2 Probolinggo. This study used writing prompts as the instrument to get the data from students ability in writing. The prompts were given to the students as a guide for them in composing recount texts. Another research instrument was a questionnaire for students. The questionnaire was to find the most difficulties faced by the students in writing recount texts. The result of this research showed that there were four major problems faced by students in composing recount text. The first problem came from text structure which was the lowest among the other three problems. Out of 30 students it was found that 87% wrote orientation 77% wrote complete sequence of events and 93% wrote re-orientation. From another 3 problems there were 450 errors found in total. As much as 62% or 281 errors in grammatical sentences which was the highest among the others 12% or 52 errors in using correct mechanics and 26% or 117 errors in selecting vocabulary. Errors were represent difficulties that the students had in writing. It is suggested that the teacher should provide the students a lot of activities such as writing a diary or journal for helping the students to improve their writing skills in recount texts. For future researchers with the same interest topic it is also expected to investigate the difficulties faced by students in other text types such as descriptive narrative report announcement and others. Menulis dianggap sebagai kemampuan yang sulit untuk dikuasai terutama bagi siswa ESL/EFL. Menulis adalah kemampuan yang kompleks yang mengharuskan siswa memiliki kemampuan dalam menguasai struktur teks tata bahasa kosa kata dan mekanika. Menulis teks recount menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi para siswa. Banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan saat mulai menulis teks recount. Kesulitan tersebut berasal dari struktur teks tata bahasa kosa kata dan mekanika penulisan. Penelitian ini mengkaji dan menjabarkan kesulitan yang dialami siswa saat menulis teks recount. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang difokuskan untuk menganalisis dan mengetahui permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh siswa saat menulis teks recount. Data penelitian ini diambil dari hasil tulisan siswa. Subyek penelitian ini terdiri dari siswa kelas 10 yang berasal dari jurusan Teknik Instalasi Tenaga Listrik di SMKN 2 Probolinggo. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah writing prompts untuk mendapatkan data terkait kemampuan siswa dalam menulis. Writing prompts diberikan kepada siswa sebagai pedoman untuk menulis teks recount. Instrumen lain yang digunakan adalah kuisioner untuk siswa. Kuisioner digunakan untuk menemukan permasalahan yang paling sering dihadapi oleh siswa saat menulis teks recount. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada empat masalah utama yang dihadapi oleh siswa saat menulis teks recount. Masalah pertama berasal dari struktur teks dimana merupakan permasalahan yang paling rendah diantara 3 masalah lainnya. Dari 30 siswa ditemukan sebanyak 87% menulis orientation 77% menulis peristiwa secara lengkap 93% menulis re-orientation. Dari 3 masalah lainnya ditemukan 450 kesalahan secara keseluruhan. Sebanyak 62% atau 281 kesalahan terjadi di grammar atau struktur tata bahasa yang merupakan masalah yang sering ditemui dibandingkan yang lainnya 12% atau 52 kesalahan dalam mekanika penulisan dan 26% atau 117 kesalahan dalam tata bahasa. Disarankan kepada guru untuk siswa lebih memperbanyak kegiatan menulis seperti menulis buku harian atau jurnal guna membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mereka. Bagi para peneliti dengan minat yang sama diharapkan meneliti kesulitan yang dialami siswa pada tipe teks lainnya seperti teks deskriptif cerita laporan pengumuman dan jenis teks lainnya.
