Abstract

ABSTRACT Mauludiyah Rizki Ba da. 2017. The Implementation of Participation Point System (PPS) Strategy to Increase Eighth Graders Oral Participation in English Learning and Teaching Process in SMPN 10 Malang. Thesis Department of English Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Furaidah M.A. (II) Drs. Andi Muhtar M.A. Keywords tangible reward external-internal motivation Participation Point System (PPS) strategy reward-seeking behavior Students active involvement in learning is important to make the students achieve their learning objectives. The students involvement during the class can be seen from their active participation especially their oral participation. Most of the students in 8C class of SMPN 10 MALANG were very passive during the English class. They tended to be very quiet and became passive listeners when listening to teacher s lectures. In the informal talk with the students the researcher found that their being passive was due to their low motivation in learning English their hesitancy to raise their hands to ask or answer teacher s questions and their fear of making mistakes. Another reason for their being passive during the class was the lack of opportunity to partake orally because the teacher often give long lectures without involving the students participation. Teachers as learning facilitators should motivate the students to take part actively during the learning and teaching process. One of the strategies that can be implemented is Participation Point System (PPS) strategy. This strategy provides points to reward each participation that the students make in English learning activities. This study was conducted to increase students oral participation by implementing Participation Point System (PPS) strategy. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design and this study involved 34 eighth graders of 8C class. The data were collected by using field notes written in each meeting written questionnaires and also informal talk between the researcher and some students. This study was carried out in two cycles which covered eight meetings. The implementation of this study was considered successful if 30 out of 34 students (88% students) partook orally during the English class in each meeting. This study found that the students oral participation could increase gradually. The increase of the students oral participation from the first until the fourth meeting in the second cycle was 88% 91% 97% and 100% students. This shows that the Participation Point System (PPS) strategy worked well in increasing the eighth graders oral participation. This strategy was successful in creating more enjoyable class atmosphere and making the students feel confident in partaking orally and more competitive. However this strategy was only used to give external motivation. Therefore it is suggested for other researchers to find out strategies that can move the students reward-seeking behavior which focuses on tangible rewards into something more internal namely the feeling of satisfaction that comes from students enjoyment in taking part actively during the English class.
