Abstract

Keywords problem solving model of learning the students achievement in civics subject matter in elementary school Civics education is a social subject matter which aims to form or construct good citizens who know will and capable to do the good things. The good citizens are those who realize and bring about their rights and duties well as their capacities as citizens. This study aimed to (1) describe the implementation of the problem solving model of learning in the learning process of the civics subject matter done by the students of class V SDN Lecari (2) to describe the effects of the implementation of the problem solving model of learning towards the students activities and participation (3) to know the effect in the students achievement of class V in civics subject matter after following the problem solving model of learning. The research design used in this study was classroom action research (CAR) following Kemmis and McTaggart s model through two cycles. The focus of this study was the improvement of the students achievement in civics subject matter by using the problem solving model of learning in class V SDN Lecari Sukorejo-Pasuruan. The subject of this study was the students of class V which consist of 21 students. The technique used to collect the data wee observation interview and field notes. The data analysis was done by using qualitative approach. The students achievement in civics subject matter by using the problem solving model of learning in the main material about the freedom doing organization showed that 8 students did not yet fulfill the criteria of success in the preliminary study while in cycle I they reduced from 8 to 5. All students fulfill the criteria of success in cycle II in the 84.7% which was considered very good and the achievement improved in the 5.1% so that the ability to solve the students problems improved with a very good criteria. The conclusion of this study was (a) the implementation of the problem solving model of learning in civics subject matter was considered successful because all of the students of class V SDN Lecari have already fulfilled the criteria of success determined that was 8805 65 (b) the implementation of the problem solving model of learning can improve the students activities and participation of the students class V SDN Lecari Sukorejo-Pasuruan (c) the implementation of the problem solving model of learning can improve the students achievement. This was because the problem solving model of learning was suitable for the students characteristics. To improve the students activities participation achievement the researcher suggests to use the problem solving model of learning for students in all level especially for teachers.
