Abstract

Audience awareness plays an important role in a writing process. The consideration of audiences helps writers determine how to write how much information to include how long to make the text how subjective or objective the writers should be and how formal or informal the text should be. The study is intended to investigate the effect of audiences in this case familiar audiences on the quality of analytical exposition compositions of foreign language learners in senior high school level in terms of content organization and language use. This study was conducted by using experimental design in which two groups considered as one is measured in two different tasks writing analytical exposition text with familiar audiences (in the form of letter-writing composition) and writing analytical exposition text without familiar audiences (in the form of topic bound composition). On the first week one group were involved in the first task and the other were in the second task. On the second term they did it vice versa. The study found that the there is no significant difference between the quality of senior high school students analytical exposition compositions with familiar audiences and those without familiar audiences in terms of content organization and language use. The contradictory findings might be caused by their abilities to explore ideas and elaborate their background knowledge which are in fair category. Other causative factors are their inadequate knowledge of writing their limited amount of vocabulary and knowledge of grammar The average ability of students to explore ideas and elaborate their background knowledge may cause them to write in a fair quality in both writing with and without familiar audiences. Besides the inadequate knowledge of writing probably causes them to have no difference in quality in the aspect of organization in writing with audience consideration or not. Furthermore the limited amount of vocabulary and knowledge and grammar cause them to show no difference in the quality of writing on the aspect of language use whether they consider the audiences or not while writing. In conclusion the findings of this study show that familiar audience does not prove to have a significant influence on the quality of the senior high school students analytical exposition composition in terms of content organization and language use because of their fair ability. It is therefore recommended that teachers be more creative in creating writing activities to improve students proficiency and similar study be conducted in the higher level of proficiency of senior high school level.
